Sarah Krüg, Executive Director of CANCER101, lost both of her parents to cancer and diabetes at a young age. Throughout milestones in life, such as getting accepted into the college of her dreams, landing her first job, and getting married, she has written hundreds of letters to her parents, which have been a great coping mechanism. Over 400 letters remain in a shoebox that she has referred to for decades as her “Letters to the Milky Way®”, and she’s continued to write these letters over the years. We turned this concept of writing messages into a moving event, where the community can connect with others that share similar experiences of loss and show their support for the fight against cancer. People can write their own letters in support of the fight against cancer or to someone they’ve lost on eco-friendly lanterns that are launched into the sky or on floating lanterns in the water. This movement has spread across 13 cities globally.
